This week we are reading:
Title: "Eames? He's in Mombasa."
Author: chasingriver
Rating: Teen and Up (PG-13)
Author's Summary: Arthur tells himself that light surveillance is part of the job. He almost believes it.

This short fic was written this summer for Inceptiversary/Inception Kink/Trope Bingo. It's a very fun in-universe view of how Eames and Arthur's relationship developed.

I'll post some discussion questions in the comments and I welcome anyone else to post questions or topics they wish to discuss.

This is another one of those tropes where I could read a fafillion and still read more. What's so great about this trope is that it can be humorous, serious, dark (those I avoid), or any combination there in.

There is one, whose title escapes me, but it's about Arthur keeping tabs on Eames. So much so that he phones Eames while Eames is on a cruse ship thinking he needs rescue from the mid Atlantic. It too is also a humours take on this trope.

I'm going to be the Mom-friend here and say that the two are equally good for different reasons. I love that you get both sides in this fic. I love that Eames catches on to what Arthur is doing and "sends him on a merry chase". Which is another element that this fandom seems to attach to this trope.

YES. I love that fic you mention!

And I also particularly love this example of this trope because they're both stalking each other. That circular stalking is beloved by me.

OMG this is a trope that I love so much. Is it "Breaking and Entering" where Eames breaks into Arthur's houses and Arthur leaves gifts for him and then tracks him down when he disappears? I think it is, and I love that one.

Another fantastic thing about this trope, which I think shows up in "Breaking and Entering," is that frequently their version of stalking each other actually results in keeping each other safe. That's a difference between this fic and many of the other fics with this trope. Usually I see this trope accompanied with one of them killing the other's enemies, or one of them swooping in to save the other when they get in trouble. This fic is actually a remarkably innocent and almost normal example of stalking fic, lol.

I actually really love that Eames turns out to have been playing Arthur the whole time. I like how it takes Arthur's upper hand away a little bit, where Arthur had been getting a little full of himself with how sure he was that he'd been stalking Eames and Eames had no idea.

I think it makes total sense that Eames, noticing the extent to which Arthur was willing to stalk, then started prodding him into more and more. It's a very Eamesian thing to do. And I love how Arthur, learning about this, starts to get furious and then Eames has to remind him that he's not exactly the innocent party in all this, and then Arthur backs down. That seemed very Arthurian to me.

And I loved that Arthur's final revelation is that he's really just as immature as Eames. Embrace it, kiddo. ;-)

The fact that they have a conversation about it, get into a wee bit of an argument, and then Eames points out that Arthur isn't innocent either AND Arthur agrees shows another kink of mine, a healthy adult relationship where conversation is used as a vehicle to understanding.

Yeah, they're both immature, yeah they're both dorks, but they also recognize the flaws and see time as an added element of character.
