This was a lot of fun to read. I think the fact that it was extreme and that the author went all-in is what made it work. Any hesitation and the quirk might have just ended up as silly without substance. I also like how every element of the story was ridiculous except the characters feelings for each... the love and pining between Arthur and Eames, Mal's devotion to Cobb, Ariadne's protectiveness of her friends... loved that.

I loved the style of this fic. I loved the overblown comic-style intros contrasted with the "normal" writing, especially how the one segues into the other for comedic effect. Brilliantly done.
Completely agree that the emotion felt so real - maybe even more so, in contrast to the silliness of the context:) Eames' pining and sense of inadequacy is heartbreaking. This line:
"While Eames thought, You are the only reason why I am alive."
My heart!!!

I completely agree that the author's dedication made it work! Like the excerpts from the comic were so ridiculous and I found them hard to read, but it made it that much more satisfying to see the more emotional side of the fic.

For me, part of the beauty of the Arthur/Eames relationship is that I love them equally whether it's a slow burn or obsession at first sight... it's always good.

I also like the reoccurring theme of "afraid to ruin a good thing" that we see in this fic and many others. Even though they both want a real relationship, they're so in love that any piece of connection is better than nothing, that whole "I want all of you, but I'll take as much of you as I can have" type of devotion.

Yes, I love this set up too - I'm a sucker for pining. This fic ticks a lot of my boxes.

I'm an absolute sucker for a bit of a long, drawn-out build up. I LOVE a lengthy (even multi chapter!) build up with plenty of pining (all the pining), and then the emotional pay off when they finally work it out is all the greater. I'm always invested in them as a couple, and I love seeing them play out their relationship in pretty much any scenario, but I do really enjoy getting to know a particular writer's take on the characters/dynamic before we get to the good stuff... And especially when one or both doesn't really like the other,so we then get to see the development of the relationship over time and the development of their feelings for each other - or realisation of feelings that were already there. Antimony by this same author is one of my all time favourites for this very reason.
Getting back to this fic, I think it's a great set up of their relationship, and feels emotionally realistic to me, despite the quirky premise. The little flashbacks and Eames' reminiscences about the past lend real weight to their relationship development, I think.

I like that you kind of get to see different aspects of Eames' affections? Like yes, you get the description of when they met and how Eames was immediately attracted to Arthur, but by this point in their lives, Eames has this deeper appreciation for Arthur and his skills and for saving his life. Like, even if they weren't in a romantic relationship, they already have this solid bond.

Arthur as the one with the shady past totally made sense for me (totally my headcanon, of course). But also I don't really see Eames as someone with much of a criminal nature -- mostly as a result of boredom or circumstance. I don't really get anti-establishment vibes from him, or the outrage/embitterment/etc. that might motivate criminal behavior. More like... he enjoys doing things that just happen to be illegal, oops. So when we're dealing with superhero/supervillain dynamics, Eames just fits the hero category better.

That's a really interesting question. I feel like I am happy with any backstory to the characters, and find either of them (or both! Or neither!) as the 'bad guy' a natural fit. I think this probably says a lot about the high quality of the writing on this fandom, too :)
You've got me thinking - I'm going to trawl through my bookmarks and see if I have a preference...

Arthur smiled brilliantly. "There's no such thing as being over-prepared."
"Watch it, you're becoming a caricature of yourself," Eames replied

^^ That's just brilliant, talk about making the most of the format.

I love this bit for the poignancy followed by the laugh:
"If it means settling for half a dream, then half a dream it is, Eames thought. It's more than what most people can ask for, and even heroes have their Solomon dilemmas. He used to aim higher, once, but back then he also had Alliance equipment and the ability to fly."

I also really enjoy Mal's: "Do you know what it is to be a lover? You do now!" I thought it was a really funny use of her iconic line, making it into her superpower, and also highlighting that it's really a bit of a silly line to begin with... or is that just me?

Agreed! I've always found Mal's big line a bit awkward, a little too noir. I supposed we could blame it on Cobb's imperfect copy, but still.
